We look after the UK tax affairs of over a hundred expat clients in more than 40 different countries. Their circumstances are all different.
Some are working in European capitals like Brussels and Paris only a short hop on Eurostar from London.
Some have retired to places like Spain or New Zealand. Some are working much more remotely in Angola, Russia and Indonesia and other far flung countries.
Most don’t have much support from a global employer and they and their spouses/partners and families have the huge task of settling into and then living in a new country and culture.
My daughter is an expat – she hasn’t lived in England for 10 years and in that time she’s lived in America, South Africa, Brussels and now Luxembourg.
Over on her blog she’s exploring what it means to be an expat for 31 days in October.
If you are, have been or plan to live abroad why not take a look and see if you agree?
